Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
